Punjab Government Approves Prosecution of Dera Chief Ram Rahim in Sacrilege Cases

The Punjab government has officially sanctioned the prosecution of Gurmeet Ram Rahim Singh, the leader of Dera Sacha Sauda, in connection with three significant sacrilege cases from 2015. These incidents triggered widespread protests from the Sikh community, leading to violent clashes and the tragic deaths of two demonstrators during police firing.

This crucial decision comes just three days after the Supreme Court lifted a stay imposed by the Punjab and Haryana High Court on the trial against Ram Rahim Singh. The Supreme Court’s order was prompted by a petition from the Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) government, led by Chief Minister Bhagwant Mann, which sought to expedite the legal proceedings.

The sacrilege cases have been a source of tension in Punjab, with accusations against Ram Rahim Singh related to the disrespect of religious symbols. The events of 2015 not only incited public outrage but also raised significant concerns regarding law and order in the state. Following the government’s approval for prosecution, it is anticipated that the trial will proceed without further delays, addressing the long-standing grievances of the affected communities.
