The ‘One Nation One Election’ bill has been introduced in the the parliament during Lok Sabha session on Tuesday and has been approved for deliberation by the Joint Parliamentary Committee which will be consisting Congress MPs Priyanka Gandhi Vadra, Manish Tewari, Sukhdev Bhagat and Randeep Singh Surjewala.

The bill, proposes simultaneous elections to the Lok Sabha and state assemblies across India.

Congress and other Opposition parties have voiced opinions against the bill on Tuesday and since the beginning, and, for the bill to pass 2/3rd majority is needed in the JPC as well. The Opposition’s concern is the bill’s potential impact on democracy.

According to the Opposition, introducing the law now would be disproportionately benefitting the ruling party. As giving it would give it undue influence over the electoral process in states, and could undermine the autonomy of regional parties.

These Bills, which were approved by the Cabinet last week, seek to pave the way for holding simultaneous elections to the Lok Sabha and state assemblies across India.

Opposition members opposed the bill’s introduction. In the division, 269 members voted in favour of the bill’s introduction, while 196 voted against it.
The bills will now be sent to a Joint Parliamentary Committee (JPC) for further deliberations.
