Delhi Polls: Congress Promises ₹8,500 Monthly Allowance for Jobless Youth

The Congress on Sunday unveiled the “Yuva Udaan Yojana,” a scheme aimed at providing monthly financial assistance of ₹8,500 for one year to educated but unemployed youth in Delhi, if the party is voted to power in the national capital.

Announcing the scheme, Congress leader and former Rajasthan deputy chief minister Sachin Pilot emphasized that the assistance will not be given for “sitting at home.” He stated, “We will provide financial assistance to youths who can show their skills in a company, factory or organisation. They will get money through these companies. This is not a scheme under which one will get money while sitting at home.”

Pilot further explained, “We will try that people are absorbed in those fields where they have received training, so that they can improve their skill set.”

Congress’ other promises for Delhi polls

On January 6, the Congress announced the “Pyari Didi Yojana,” promising ₹2,500 per month to women if elected to govern Delhi. Two days later, on January 8, the party introduced the “Jeevan Raksha Yojana,” which offers free health insurance of up to ₹25 lakh.

Polling for the 70-member Delhi Assembly is scheduled for February 5, with votes set to be counted on February 8. The Congress has been out of power in Delhi since December 2013, when the Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) ousted it.

In the previous elections, AAP secured landslide victories, winning 67 seats in 2015 and 62 seats in 2020, while the Bharatiya Janata Party finished a distant second in both contests. The Congress, however, failed to win a single seat in either election.
