Prime Minister Narendra Modi paid homage on Thursday to former Prime Minister Jawaharlal Nehru on the occasion of his 135th birth anniversary. In a post on X, PM Modi stated, “On the occasion of his birth anniversary, I pay homage to our former Prime Minister Pandit Jawaharlal Nehru.”
Congress leader Priyanka Gandhi also honored Nehru at Shanti Van in Delhi, while Congress President Mallikarjun Kharge and Leader of Opposition Rahul Gandhi posted their tributes on X.
November 14, celebrated as Children’s Day in India, honors Nehru’s legacy as the first Prime Minister of independent India and his affection for children, who fondly called him ‘Chacha Nehru.’ Following Nehru’s passing in 1964, his birthday was officially recognized as ‘Bal Diwas’ (Children’s Day) to commemorate his contribution to the nation and his emphasis on nurturing the youth.
Born on November 14, 1889, in Prayagraj, Uttar Pradesh, Nehru served as Prime Minister from August 15, 1947, until his death on May 27, 1964, following a distinguished role in India’s freedom struggle. On this day, schools across the country hold special activities, games, and competitions for students, while government bodies organize events to honor his memory.
Initially, India celebrated Children’s Day on November 20, as designated by the United Nations. However, after Nehru’s death, a parliamentary resolution in 1964 shifted the celebration to his birthday as a tribute to his enduring legacy.
