Prime Minister Narendra Modi extended his heartfelt congratulations to Dr. Navin Ramgoolam on his historic electoral victory in Mauritius. In a message shared on X, PM Modi expressed optimism about working closely with Ramgoolam to enhance the “unique partnership” between India and Mauritius.
In his post, PM Modi wrote, “Had a warm conversation with my friend @Ramgoolam_Dr, congratulating him on his historic electoral victory. I wished him great success in leading Mauritius and extended an invitation to visit India. Look forward to working closely together to strengthen our special and unique partnership.”
Mauritius held its parliamentary elections on Sunday, with polls open from 7 am to 6 pm. The election, the 12th since the nation’s independence in 1968, saw voters choose 62 legislators from a diverse pool of 68 parties and five alliances.
Pravind Jugnauth, the outgoing Prime Minister, conceded defeat, acknowledging his alliance’s significant loss. Speaking to reporters, he remarked, “The population has decided to choose another team. I wish good luck to the country.”
Dr. Navin Ramgoolam, a seasoned leader and son of former Prime Minister Seewoosagur Ramgoolam, expressed confidence before the results. He told reporters, “We are heading towards a big victory tomorrow. The people are waiting for this liberation.” His prediction proved accurate, marking a significant political shift in Mauritius.
India and Mauritius share a deep-rooted relationship, underpinned by common history, culture, and demography. With nearly 70% of Mauritius’ 1.2 million population of Indian origin, the ties between the two nations remain exceptionally strong.
PM Modi’s outreach signals India’s continued commitment to fostering this unique partnership.
