Shazia Marri, a leader of the Pakistan Peoples Party (PPP), has issued a stark warning that the federal government will collapse if the PPP withdraws its support. The warning stems from the government’s failure to consult PPP on key decisions, particularly regarding the formation of the Pakistan Maritime and Shipping Port Authority.
PPP’s Concerns Over Key Decisions
Marri criticized the federal government’s decision-making process, especially the creation of the Maritime and Shipping Port Authority, which she claimed was made without proper discussions with PPP and the Sindh government. She emphasized that decisions on such crucial national matters should not be taken without consulting all relevant stakeholders, including the PPP and provincial authorities.
Trust and Constitutional Violations
The PPP leader also pointed out that the federal government, led by Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif, has violated constitutional provisions by failing to convene the National Interest Council. Marri stressed that the council should have been called every three months, but it has not been convened for over eleven months.
Potential Impact of PPP’s Withdrawal
Marri made it clear that while the government remains in power due to PPP’s support, it will not be able to survive if the party decides to withdraw. She called for stronger adherence to constitutional principles and for decisions on important national issues to involve discussions with the PPP and provincial governments.
Political Fallout in Punjab
The political alliance between the PPP and Pakistan Muslim League-Nawaz (PML-N) has also led to tensions, particularly in Punjab. PPP’s spokesperson argued that the alliance has caused damage to the party in the region, with predictions that the PML-N will soon face the consequences of the partnership.
