Russia Agrees to Repatriate Indian Soldiers : Report

Indian citizens fighting in the Russian Army would all be brought back, Russia has decided, according to ANI sources. At their most recent meeting in Moscow, Russian President Vladimir Putin and Prime Minister Narendra Modi discussed this issue.

PM Modi and President Putin had a cordial encounter on Monday in Moscow, where they discussed on bilateral and political various issues including the current state of affairs in Ukraine.

As to the Indian government, diplomatic and discussion efforts are necessary to resolve the situation between Russia and Ukraine instead of resorting to armed action.

After the fight started in February 2022, many Indians were allegedly recruited to support Russian forces, raising concerns about the number of Indians participating in the Russian Army. These people were allegedly forced into military duty after being drawn to Russia for job or educational prospects.

In June, the Ministry of External Affairs (MEA) confirmed that at least four Indian nationals, including one from Hyderabad, had lost their lives while serving in the Russian Army during the Ukraine conflict. Additionally, in April, the MEA reported that ten Indian nationals who were in supporting roles within the Russian Army had returned to India.

During Modi’s visit to Moscow, Putin warmly welcomed him to his residence at Novo-Ogaryovo, referring to Modi as his “dear friend” and expressing delight at their meeting, as reported by Russia’s TASS news agency.

As the US State Department notes, Modi’s first trip to Moscow in five years comes amid growing international concern over India’s ties with Russia in light of the ongoing crisis with Ukraine.
