Indian Nationals Safe During Bangladesh Protests: EAM Jaishankar Takes Charge

The Ministry of External Affairs (MEA) has assured that all Indian nationals in Bangladesh are safe amidst ongoing violent protests in the country. The MEA is in close contact with officials in Bangladesh and is closely monitoring the situation. External Affairs Minister S. Jaishankar is personally overseeing the developments.

MEA spokesperson Randhir Jaiswal stated that there are approximately 8,500 Indian students and around 15,000 Indian nationals residing in Bangladesh. The ministry has issued a travel advisory urging Indian nationals to stay in touch with the Indian High Commission in Dhaka for assistance. Jaiswal emphasized that the High Commission will provide regular updates and assist those in need.

The unrest in Bangladesh is driven by protests against a controversial government job quota system, which has resulted in several deaths and numerous injuries. In response to the escalating violence, authorities have imposed restrictions on internet and mobile services and limited public gatherings.

The MEA has advised Indian nationals to avoid local travel and minimize their movements. Additionally, security measures have been heightened outside the Bangladesh High Commission in New Delhi as a precaution against potential protests.
