Father Kills 15-Year-Old Daughter Over TikTok Videos in Pakistan

A 15-year-old girl was shot to death by her father and mother’s brother in what authorities term a rather tragic honor killing case in the Balochistan city of Quetta, Pakistan. Authorities said the victim had been creating TikTok videos-anything that made her father infuriated. Since she refused to quit, her father colluded with her maternal uncle to kill her.

Father and Uncle Held for Cold-Blooded Murder

According to police reports, Anwarul-Haq hails from Pakistan and has his wife and children who lived years ago in the US. He had come back to Pakistan along with his daughter Hira on January 15. Two of their daughters were back there with his wife. When Anwarul-Haq came to know about Hira’s presence on TikTok, he got enraged and asked her to stop making videos. When Hira refused to give in, Anwarul-Haq planned her murder, colluding with her maternal uncle, Tayyab Ali.

Police sources have said that the murder was premeditated. Anwarul-Haq and Tayyab Ali have been arrested after they accepted their involvement in the murder. The case has been forwarded to the Serious Crime Investigation Wing for further investigation.

TikTok Drama Spills Over to the US

Meanwhile, in a development related to TikTok, it continues to come under scrutiny from the United States. The social media app still cannot be accessed on the Apple and Google stores. US President Donald Trump said he would permit the app, but only on the condition that the US owns 50% of TikTok.

“We have to save TikTok because we have to save a lot of jobs. We don’t want to give our business to China… I agreed to approve TikTok on the condition that the USA will own 50% of TikTok,” Trump commented, making clear his intent to balance national security concerns with economic interests.

Elon Musk Critiques TikTok Ban but Calls for Change in Policy

Elon Musk, CEO of Tesla, has come out in support of allowing TikTok to operate in the US. According to him, banning the app will run counter to the basic principle of freedom of speech. In a post on X (formerly Twitter), he said, “I have been against a TikTok ban for a long time because it goes against freedom of speech. That said, the current situation where TikTok is allowed to operate in America, but X is not allowed to operate in China is unbalanced. Something needs to change.”

Earlier in April 2023, Musk had also opposed a potential TikTok ban in the United States. He noted, “In my opinion, TikTok should not be banned in the USA, even though such a ban may benefit the X platform. Doing so would be contrary to freedom of speech and expression. It is not what America stands for.”

The tragic death of 15-year-old Hira in Pakistan over her videos has shed light on the ongoing debate about social media apps like TikTok. As the app continues to face regulatory challenges in the US, with strong opinions from political figures and business leaders, the case stands as a stark reminder of extreme measures some people are willing to take in the name of “honor.” The investigation into Hira’s death continues, with the authorities pledging to bring justice.
