Over 500 Women Celebrate ‘Saree Goes Global' at Times Square

Over 500 women from around the world converged in Times Square, New York, to celebrate the timeless elegance and heritage of the saree. The event, titled ‘Saree Goes Global,’ was organized by ‘British Women in Sarees’ in partnership with the Uma organization, drawing participants from India, Bangladesh, Nepal, the UK, the USA, the UAE, Uganda, and other countries where the iconic garment holds cultural significance.

The gathering, as reported by PTI, was not just a fashion statement but a meaningful effort to support the handloom artisans in India. Dr. Rita Kakati-Shah, the Uma Global President, and Dr. Dipti Jain, Chairperson of British Women in Sarees, emphasized the saree’s role as a symbol of unity and empowerment for women worldwide.

Participants adorned themselves in a stunning array of sarees, showcasing a rich tapestry of styles, fabrics, and embellishments including the traditional khadi. They proudly displayed their national flags, danced together, and shared stories reflecting their cultural heritage and the significance of the saree in their lives.

The event featured a lively ‘saree walkathon’ accompanied by music and dance performances, highlighting the saree’s timeless appeal and its ability to transcend borders and cultures. Dr. Jain, a geriatrician by profession, expressed her passion for sarees and her dedication to promoting awareness of this cultural garment on a global scale.

Dr. Kakati-Shah, a former medic turned entrepreneur and philanthropist, underscored Uma’s commitment to empowering underprivileged girls, youth, and women through educational and cultural initiatives, not only in New York but also in other regions.

The event’s significance went beyond the celebration of diversity; it was also a platform to support artisans in rural India, preserving traditional craftsmanship. Proceeds from the event will benefit three families of weavers, symbolizing a direct contribution to sustaining this vital but often overlooked industry.

“As the vibrant pulse of Times Square beat to the rhythm of the saree walkathon, participants and spectators alike embraced the spirit of unity and collaboration. In a world often divided, events like ‘Saree Goes Global’ serve as a powerful reminder of the strength found in our diversity,” stated the event’s press release.

The ‘Saree Goes Global’ event not only showcased the elegance and beauty of the saree but also underscored its role as a symbol of cultural heritage, empowerment, and global solidarity.
