The Government should ensure safety of students: Kumari Selja

The General Secretary of the All India Congress Committee and former Union Minister Kumari Selja said that the safety of students is at stake in the BJP-JJP alliance government. Even inside universities, colleges, and schools, girls are not safe. When cases of harassment against students come to light, neither is there immediate action taken nor are necessary steps taken to prevent such incidents from recurring. The alliance government should issue a white paper on the actions taken so far to ensure the safety of students. In a statement released to the media, Kumari Selja said that the BJP tried to loot the entire country by chanting the slogan of “Save daughters, educate daughters” from the land of Panipat.

However, the responsibility for their daughters is becoming apparent only in Haryana. According to the National Crime Records Bureau (NCRB) report for the year 2024, Haryana ranks second in cases of crime against women in the country. The former Union Minister Selja said that within a year, 1787 cases of crime have been registered in the state. This means that on average, there were 5 incidents of violence every day. This gives an idea of how alarming the situation has become regarding crimes against women in Haryana.
The situation is such that women, from young girls to elderly women, remain apprehensive about their safety. Kumari Selja said that It’s shameful that girls studying in government schools, colleges, and universities are continuously becoming victims of exploitation. Throughout the year, the voices against exploitation by students of schools, colleges, and universities have been raised, making headlines in newspapers. Many times, students had to write anonymous letters.

Parents of students even tried to blockade schools to bring their concerns to the government. The former Union Minister said that the types of cases emerging from government colleges and schools indicate that the BJP-JJP alliance government is not serious about the safety of students at any level. With repeated incidents of exploitation and no immediate action, such tendencies are emboldening people. Kumari Selja said that the police need to take immediate action, and harassment committees need to be strengthened further, so that such incidents do not recur and students can receive education in a safe environment. Selja said that due to the weak willpower of the government, the people of the country and the state are feeling insecure, and due to this approach of the government, the public’s mood has completely turned against the BJP. The public is ready to vote against the BJP in response to its future consequences.
