In what turned out to be a mistaken identity, Chiranji Saini, a vegetable vendor of Rambans village under Govindgarh Police Station, died on Tuesday after he was lynched by a group of persons a day before. Saini was mercilessly beaten when he was returning from nearby fields after attending to nature’s call. Saini was rushed to a local hospital and after preliminary treatment he was referred to Jaipur where he did at about 3 p.m. on Tuesday.

There was a huge outrage among the locals as the news of his death spread and the district administration rushed police force to prevent any flare up. The persons accused of lynching Saini belong to minority community.

According to sources, Saini was returning from nearby fields after relieving himself when he was waylaid by a mob of persons who were chasing some thieves who had stolen a tractor. Finding the owner and his friends and police personnel from nearby Sadar Police Station hot on their trail, the thieves made good their escape after leaving behind the tractor in the fields near a powerhouse. By quirk of fate, Saini was returning from the fields when the owner and his friends spotted him there and mistaking him for one of the thieves beat him up mercilessly.

The police have registered an FIR against the tractor owner and his associates.

However, the police has refrained from providing more details.

SHO Deputy Assistant Inspector Shyam Lal Meena confirmed that Chiranji Saini lost his life after being badly thrashed and said that the police has registered a case. “A case of the tractor theft was registered in the police station area of Sadar and they have recovered the vehicle from Rambagh area,” the police official said.
