Five months post the conclusion of the Municipal Corporation of Manesar’s (MCM) contract with a private firm, the urban local bodies department has recently sanctioned Rs 15.1 crore for citywide door-to-door waste collection, segregation, and processing. The civic body will engage an agency through a tender process to oversee these operations.
The period of the contract with the new agency will be of one year. Since MCM has no dedicated agency for doorstep waste collection and processing, it led to mounds of garbage dumped at vacant plots.
“We have received an administrative approval from the ULB department for the tender, which will now be floated for door-to-door waste collection, segregation and processing. The process to get a new agency on board will be completed in the next 15 to 20 days,” MCM commissioner Ashok Kumar Garg told.
MCM’s previous contract with a private firm ended on July 13, 2023.As part of a stop-gap arrangement, the civic body on July 10 had launched a helpline number (7428860890) for residents to raise complaints about garbage collection. The residents could send photos, videos and locations where the waste was accumulated on the helpline number, so that MCM teams could address them on a timely basis.
The residents, however, sought to know that when MCM knew their contract with the private firm was going to get over, why not the officials completed the tender process earlier which could have saved the residents from the hassle.
Rahul Yadav, a resident of Manesar, expressed concerns stating, “Since August of last year, there hasn’t been any agency responsible for collecting our garbage. This has led to a buildup of waste on vacant plots and roads in IMT sectors and villages. The temporary use of tractor trolleys proved inadequate as they couldn’t cover the entire area under the civic body’s jurisdiction. MCM should also monitor the waste disposal practices of vendors handling condominium waste, as they too contribute to dumping on vacant plots and roads.
