The Ministry of Road Transport and Highways is set to introduce a Global Navigation Satellite System (GNSS)-based toll collection system on select national highways. This system will complement the existing FASTag system.
Union Minister Nitin Gadkari announced this initiative in a written reply to the Rajya Sabha. Pilot studies for the GNSS system have been completed on the Bengaluru-Mysore section of NH-275 in Karnataka and the Panipat-Hisar section of NH-709 in Haryana. The goal is to improve toll collection efficiency and reduce congestion at toll plazas.
Key details include:
Pilot Studies & EOI: The system was discussed in an international workshop on June 25, 2024, followed by a global expression of interest (EOI) launched on June 7, 2024, with submissions due by July 22, 2024.
FASTag vs GNSS-Based Tolling:
FASTag: Uses RFID technology with a windshield sticker for automatic toll payments but still requires stopping at toll booths, leading to potential delays. Users need to maintain a prepaid balance.
GNSS-Based System: Utilizes satellite communication to track vehicle locations and calculate tolls based on distance travelled. This system aims to eliminate physical toll booths, allowing for seamless travel without stops and offering flexible payment options.
Initially, the GNSS system will operate alongside FASTag in a hybrid model, allowing for a gradual transition. While FASTag users won’t need to replace their tags immediately, GNSS-enabled devices may become necessary in the future.
