Google’s YouTube Music Now Lets Users Identify Songs By Humming

Finding your favorite music is easy with numerous streaming platforms, but identifying a song stuck in your head can be challenging. Google has introduced a handy solution that lets users discover songs by humming to their Android smartphones.

This feature, called “play, sing or hum a song,” works like Apple’s Shazam but has the advantage of not needing the actual song or lyrics to identify it. Available through the YouTube Music app for Android users, this new tool aims to help users quickly find songs.

When tested with five songs (in English, Hindi, and Kannada), YouTube Music accurately identified four. This feature is particularly useful for recalling a song by its melody rather than its name or lyrics.

In addition to humming, users can also play or sing a song, which significantly improves the chances of correct identification. Although a similar feature has been available on Google Assistant, integrating it directly into the music app offers a convenient one-stop solution for song identification and playback.

To use this feature on YouTube Music, open the YouTube app on your Android phone, click the search icon (magnifying glass), select the music wave icon, and start humming or singing.

The app usually needs about five to ten seconds of humming or audio samples to identify the song. Once identified, the song can be played directly on the YouTube Music app.
