According to officials, the Enforcement Directorate filed a case against BBC India on Thursday for alleged foreign exchange violations.

This is not the first time an Indian agency has investigated the UK-based broadcaster. The BBC offices in India were searched in February of this year as part of an investigation by income tax authorities.

The BBC was embroiled in a controversy over its documentary India: The Modi Question, which was critical of Gujarat chief minister Narendra Modi’s role at the time.

Under the provisions of the Foreign Exchange Management Act (FEMA), the ED has requested documents and recordings of statements from some company executives. According to reports, BBC will be investigated for FDI violations.

The Foreign Exchange Management Act (FEMA) governs the inflow and outflow of foreign exchange.

The income tax authorities stated that irregularities in BBC’s accounting books were discovered following the February searches. According to the statement, the findings “indicate that tax has not been paid on certain remittances that have not been disclosed as income in India by the group’s foreign entities.”

The BBC has yet to respond to the allegations.
