In a startling development, the manager of a rural bank located in Pulwama district of Jammu and Kashmir has reportedly vanished with a sum of Rs 33 lakh from the branch under his jurisdiction, according to police sources on Wednesday.
A national news agency, citing police reports, disclosed that the manager, identified as Meraj Alam, is alleged to have absconded with the hefty amount from the Lorgham branch of Ellaquai Dehati Bank, a rural banking institution sponsored by SBI.
Sources within the police department revealed that the manager purportedly resorted to forging the signatures of account holders in order to facilitate the misappropriation of funds.
The accused, hailing from Bihar and identified as the son of Mohammad Nazir, has been missing since February 17, as per police records. An FIR (First Information Report) bearing number 13/2024 under section 409 IPC (Indian Penal Code) has been lodged at the Tral police station in connection with the incident.
Law enforcement officials have initiated efforts to locate and apprehend the accused manager, Meraj Alam, as investigations into the case continue.
