AHEAD OF MAMATA’S DELHI VISIT, CONGRESS SLAMS BJP FOR ‘SPYING’ ON CM’S NEPHEW

A day ahead of Mamata Banerjee arriving in the Capital to strengthen a strategy with like-minded parties to take on the BJP in the 2024 general elections, the opposition in unison seemed to be on full exhibit as Congress attacked the Centre for allegedly “spying” on West Bengal Chief Minister’s nephew Abhishek Banerjee who is also the all India general secretary of the TMC.

Congress is not leaving any stones unturned to reproach the BJP government regarding the Pegasus row. Abhishek Banerjee, who was allegedly spied and whose phone was tapped, has raised the hue and cry about the Pegasus row in Parliament. The case is currently in the Monsoon Session, and is seeing repeated adjournments.

Taking to Twitter on Sunday, Congress said “PM Modi took the adage, ‘keep your enemies closer’ a little too far” as it suggested the alleged Peagasus-espionage on Abhishek Banerjee.

The picture attached to the tweet displayed Abhishek Banerjee’s portrait with some text that roughly read: “You understand the chronology. Who was the target of Pegasus spyware? Abhishek Banerjee, Mamta Banerjee’s Nephew, When? In 2021. Why? There were elections in West Bengal. The insecurities of Modi government are endless.”

The Trinamool Congress was not far behind and responded on Twitter, with party leader Derek O’Brien saying “Khela Hobe” — Mamata Banerjee’s slogan for the Bengal assembly elections — in response to the Congress tweet.

Earlier, Adhir Chowdhury, president of the West Bengal Congress, had publicly expressed his desire not to field a candidate against Mamata in the Bhabanipur by-election. This time, many think that the AICC has sent a message of alliance to Mamata by speaking out against the Modi government on her official Twitter handle.

The Chief Minister is leaving for Delhi Today. During her visit to Delhi, she is expected to meet opposition parties to chalk out a roadmap for the 2024 polls

The West Bengal Chief Minister has been trying to bring like-minded parties on the same page and had hinted towards taking on the BJP together in her Martyrs’ Day speech.

“We should plan for 2024 fight from now. Nothing can be done by a doctor who comes after the patient has died. The patient can be saved if treatment is given on time. Now is your time. The more time you waste, the more the situation will worsen,” the chief minister had said.
