North Korean leader Kim Jong Un was seen attending his country’s New Year’s events, which consisted of fireworks and an ice-skating performance, the state-run KCNA reported. The event featured senior officials showing off the nation’s festive spirit; however, Kim did not give a speech at the event.
Media state coverage of the festivities also touched on the huge diplomatic step taken by Kim on the previous day. In his letter to Russian President Vladimir Putin, Kim confirmed that North Korea remains committed to developing its all-round strategic cooperation with Russia. The move has been made amid an effort by the two countries to get their ties right, in the economic and military spheres.
Kim’s public appearance with his daughter at the festivities underscores his attempts to project stability and continuity in North Korean leadership. The developments also reflect North Korea’s increasing diplomatic efforts amid global isolation.
