India continued its golden run at the World Para Athletics Championships as Simran Singh and Nishad Kumar delivered historic performances on Friday. Simran claimed gold in the women’s T12 100m, while Nishad soared to victory in the men’s T47 high jump, setting an Asian record. These victories added to India’s impressive medal tally, inspiring fans across the country.

Simran Singh Shines in 100m T12

Simran Singh made history by winning gold in the women’s T12 100m dash. She clocked a personal best of 11.95 seconds, helping India increase its medal tally to 15. Liang Yanfen of China and Spain’s Nagore Folgado Garcia finished with identical times of 12.11 seconds, taking silver.

The T12 category is for athletes with visual impairment. Simran ran with the guidance of Umar Saifi. Born prematurely at six-and-a-half months, she spent six months in an incubator. Her father, Manoj Sharma, encouraged her to pursue athletics.

“It’s fun to run for my country. I always wanted to do something for my country,” Simran said. “I have won gold in the 100m and I will now give my best to win the 200m,” she added.

Previously, Simran won gold in the 200m at the last edition in Japan and a bronze at the 2024 Paralympics. She is also set to compete in the 200m at this championship.

Nishad Kumar’s High Jump Triumph

For Nishad Kumar, it was a double celebration as he clinched gold in the men’s high jump T47 on his 26th birthday. He cleared 2.14m, breaking his personal record and setting an Asian record. Nishad’s victory marked his first gold at either the Paralympics or World Para Championships.

“I have been waiting for this day for a year. I have been working very hard for this day. Today is the day. I have given my best. It’s God’s will. No one can stop me,” said Nishad.

Nishad defeated USA’s Roderick Townsend, a five-time defending champion and three-time Paralympic gold medallist. Townsend cleared only 2.03m for bronze, while Turkey’s Abdullah Ilgaz took silver at 2.08m. Nishad, from Una in Himachal Pradesh, lost his right hand in a grass-cutting machine accident when he was six.
