Indian boxing champion Nupur Sheoran from Bhiwani, Haryana, secured India’s first medal in the ongoing 2025 World Boxing Championships in Liverpool by beating Uzbekistan’s boxer Oltinoy Sotimboeva in the quarter-finals of the women’s +80 kg (super heavyweight) division. The fight concluded with a 4–1 split decision for Nupur, securing her at least a bronze medal.
Who is Nupur Sheoran?
Nupur Sheoran, 26 years old, is from Bhiwani, Haryana, a city commonly known as the hub of Indian boxing. She belongs to a highly sporting family. Her grandfather was legendary boxer Captain Hawa Singh Sheoran, a two-time Asian Games gold medalist and prominent name in Indian boxing history. Her father, Sanjay Kumar Sheoran, is a retired international boxer and now operates the Captain Hawa Singh Boxing Academy. Her mother, Mukesh, has played for India in basketball on the Asian level. Nupur Sheoran has secured 92% in senior secondary and 73% in graduation.

The Bridge
Early on, her interests were academic rather than athletic. In 2015, her father convinced her to give boxing a try. She entered her first tournament at the sub-junior state level; she even wore her school uniform to lend her weight! As wimpy an entrance as that was, she won.
Turning Point Of Nupur Sheoran
One of the most significant turning points was in 2023 when she broke one of her feet. The injury resulted in weight gain, and she moved from the 75 kg class to the heavyweight/+80 kg class. Despite the adversity of sparring heavier, taller women, she continued. She was coached by her father to develop strength, practice footwork, and adapt strategies, particularly against women who were larger size-wise.
Prior to this world championship victory, she had impressive showings as she competed for India in the 2019 Asian Championships (75 kg), took gold in the +80 kg division in the 2025 World Boxing Cup, which was staged in Astana, and achieved a bronze in the BRICS Games 2024 in Kazan, Russia.
