The Asia Cup 2025 is approaching, and despite the strained political atmosphere, cricket fans are eagerly waiting for the high-voltage India–Pakistan contest. If both teams progress to the final, they could face each other three times within just two weeks, making the rivalry even more intense.
Akram’s Call for Discipline
Former Pakistan fast-bowling legend Wasim Akram shared his thoughts on the upcoming matches. Speaking to Telecom Asia Sport, he said, “I am sure these matches will be entertaining, just like all other India-Pakistan matches. But I hope both the players and the fans will remain disciplined and not cross the line.”
He further explained that passion is natural for supporters on both sides: “If Indians are patriotic and want their team to win, the same goes for Pakistani fans,” he remarked.
India the Favorites, Says Akram
India and Pakistan have not played a bilateral cricket series since 2013, but they often meet in international tournaments like the Asia Cup and World Cups. Looking ahead, Akram believes India have the upper hand: “India have been in better form recently and will start as favourites, but the team that handles pressure best on the day will win.”
Political Tensions Remain High
The rivalry comes at a time of escalating political tension. Relations between the two nations worsened after the Pahalgam terror attack in April 2025 and subsequent cross-border hostilities. These developments make a bilateral series highly unlikely in the near future.
Akram Hopes for Test Cricket Return
Despite the strained ties, Akram expressed hope for a return of Test cricket between the two sides: “This Asia Cup will be a feast for fans worldwide. It’s my wish that India and Pakistan also resume playing a Test series. It’s been too long, and it would be a historic spectacle for fans on both sides.”
