Ahead of the ICC Women’s Cricket World Cup 2025, beginning September 30 in Sri Lanka and India, Indian men’s Test skipper Shubman Gill reminisced about a school cricket match memory that best describes skipper Harmanpreet Kaur’s fearless batting approach.
Shubman Gill Remembers School Days
On JioHotstar’s special program Champions Wali Baat: Believe in Blue, Gill mentioned that he witnessed Harmanpreet Kaur’s brilliance for the first time when he was merely 10 or 11 years old.
When I was around 10 or 11 years old, she would visit the academy where I trained and play matches with us. I remember her demolishing our bowlers around the park. At kid level, that was a sight not very common for me. She used to bat very aggressively, which was very different from then,” said Gill.
Gill, who will lead India in the upcoming home Test series, praised Harmanpreet’s rise through the ranks, adding that it is a matter of pride for Punjab. “When anyone rises through the ranks, especially from our region in Punjab, and goes on to captain the country, it is a huge and very proud moment,” he said.
This World Cup is Harmanpreet Kaur’s first time as India’s captain in the ICC Women’s Cricket World Cup. She is renowned for her aggressive batting and calm command, something she will be called upon to do again. India, who were runners-up in 2017, will be hoping to do one better this time and win the cup.

Gill was not alone in expressing admiration for the women’s team. Suryakumar Yadav, captain of T20I, appreciated Jemimah Rodrigues and said he wants her to shine in the World Cup.
It’s always great to see someone from your home town (Mumbai) represent India at the top level. Jemimah has always been a wonderful performer, and I am sure she will perform in the World Cup,” Suryakumar mentioned, appreciating her energy and positivity on the pitch.
India’s white-ball wicket-keeper Sanju Samson complimented Richa Ghosh for her level-headedness. “We all enjoy watching Richa Ghosh. How she bats and keeps wickets, she always seems confident. There is a lot to learn from her,” said Samson.
All-rounder Hardik Pandya also posted a motivational message for the team. “Go out there and enjoy the sport. Don’t worry too much, just be yourself. A billion people are backing you and sending their love,” Pandya said.
Countdown To September 30
With the tournament mere days away, the chatter surrounding the Indian women’s team has never been more intense. Harmanpreet’s captaincy and the mix of youth and experience in the team will prove to be vital as India starts its journey for supremacy on home turf
