FLAG STICK AND COURSE BEAUTY SHOT AT DIRAB GOLF & COUNTRY CLUB STORY: Australia’s Jack Thompson hit a seven-under 65 for the second straight day to take the lead at the Saudi Open on Thursday (December 11). Thompson is a stroke ahead of Sweden’s Bjorn Hellgren who also carded a 65. Malaysia’s Ervin Chang hit a 64 to climb into third place, level with Runchanapong Youprayong of Thailand who hit a 66. Thompson’s charge into first place seems to have erased fears he would not keep his Asian Tour card for next year. The Aussie came into the season-ending event in 62nd place overall for the season, with only the top 65 keeping their cards. A win at the Dirab Golf & Country Club would catapult him into seventh place overall. Meanwhile, Saudi Open defending champ John Catlin fell from second place on Wednesday (December 10) to a crowded fifth place after hitting a 69 on day two. The American is four strokes off the leader in lockstep with overnight-leader Saptak Talwar (70) of India, Thailand’s Jazz Janewattananond (68); and Pakistan’s Ahmad Baig (64).
