Indian captain Rohit Sharma has inscribed himself in the list of all-time greats in cricket. The 38-year-old touched his 500th international match during the first ODI against Australia in Perth, only the fifth Indian to achieve this feat after Sachin Tendulkar, Virat Kohli, MS Dhoni, and Rahul Dravid. Rohit also becomes the 11th player in the world to go past the milestone.

Rohit Sharma’s Journey Across Formats

Since his debut in 2007, Rohit Sharma’s career has traversed eras, colleagues, and formats. In 273 ODIs, 67 Tests, and 159 T20Is, the Indian opener has forged a legacy characterized by refinement and reliability. He is also the Indian with the most T20I caps, highlighting his presence across all formats.

Globally, only a few names Sachin Tendulkar (664), Mahela Jayawardene (652), and Kumar Sangakkara (594) have played more international matches than Rohit, who now sits firmly among cricket’s elite.

Rohit Sharma’s Gets Out Early in Milestone 500th Match

It wasn’t the fairytale innings one would have wanted. On his comeback to international cricket since the final of the Champions Trophy 2025, Rohit Sharma scored only 8 runs off Josh Hazlewood in Perth. Still, even this short appearance could not do justice to the magnitude of his feat a 500-match odyssey with run-scoring knocks, records, and trophies galore.

Rohit Sharma Approaches Several Historic Milestones

The milestones don’t stop coming for Rohit Sharma, even at 500 games:

  • Requires 54 runs more to overtake Sourav Ganguly (11,221) and become India’s third-most ODI run-scorer.
  • Only three centuries away from becoming a member of the 20,000 international runs club a feat joined by just three Indians.
  • Next century will be his 50th international ton, a milestone achieved only by Sachin Tendulkar and Virat Kohli among Indians.

Rohit Sharma’s Legacy

Few cricketers possess such poise as Rohit Sharma. His smooth pull shots to his calm leadership are just a few examples of how he has redefined what leadership and performance for India look like. The 500-match landmark only underscores his longevity but also his unflinching excellence, making him one of the greatest figures in the game.
