Star Indian shuttler PV Sindhu defeated the first-round test at the China Masters Super 750 badminton championship in Shenzhen, China, on Wednesday. The two Olympic medallist downed Denmark’s Julie Dawall Jakobsen in straight sets, 21-4, 21-10, to advance to the women’s singles pre-quarterfinals.
PV Sindhu Displays Dominance On Court
Sindhu took only 27 minutes to eliminate her rival, bouncing back in strong form after her first-round defeat in the Hong Kong Open Super 500 last month, where she had fallen to another Dane, Line Christophersen.
The 30-year-old shuttler, who has experienced six first-round defeats on the BWF World Tour this year, was in control from the beginning. She sprinted to a dominant 21-4 win in the opening game in more than 10 minutes, leaving Jakobsen at sea for answers.
In the second game, the Dane was initially keeping up, leveling 4-4 from Sindhu’s 4-1 advantage. But Sindhu’s greater experience and her better technique soon skewed the match in her direction. A six-point run from 11-8 to 17-8 brought her back into the game, and she finished the match with firmness, showing the temperament of an experienced campaigner.
Head-to-Head Record Favors PV Sindhu
This victory contributes to Sindhu’s one-sided history with Jakobsen, having beaten her in their two earlier meetings, including a tough first-round encounter at the Yonex Swiss Open in March. Sindhu’s capacity for staying focused and playing her shots under pressure is the main ingredient for her success against younger rivals.
Later on Wednesday, India’s Ayush Shetty will take on sixth-seeded Chou Tien Chen in the men’s singles first-round match. Shetty, who upset Japan’s Kodai Naraoka last week, will look to build on his good form at the Super 750 event.
In mixed doubles competition, the combination of Ruthvika Gadde and Rohan Kapoor will face Japan’s Yuichi Shimogami and Sayaka Hobara. Both combinations will be keen on making a fine beginning and go deep into the tournament, keeping alive India’s medal prospects.
PV Sindhu Seeks Momentum After Recent Setbacks
After experiencing a series of early exits in this season, Sindhu’s authoritative victory against Jakobsen will be a confidence builder as she aims to make a strong impression in Shenzhen. The Indian veteran will focus on the pre-quarterfinal match next and would want to continue her run and play an important role at the China Masters.
