President Droupadi Murmu on Wednesday congratulated NorthEast United FC (NEUFC) on their historic victory in the just-concluded Durand Cup, Asia’s oldest football tournament. In a moment of Indian football pride, the President also awarded the coveted President’s Cup, one of the three legendary trophies handed over to the champions, at a special ceremony at Rashtrapati Bhavan.
President’s Cup: A Trophy of National Heritage
The President’s Cup was established in 1956 by India’s inaugural President, Dr. Rajendra Prasad. The years have passed, and it has become a symbol not only of sporting supremacy but also of the tournament’s strong roots in India’s history and national identity. By presenting the trophy to NEUFC, President Murmu underscored the timelessness of the Durand Cup in imprinting its legacy on Indian football.
Commemorating NEUFC’s Victory
The felicitation function witnessed the presence of club owner and Bollywood actor John Abraham, team captain Redeem Tlang, and CEO Mandar Tamhane, who were handed over the trophy by the President. Senior dignitaries, Durand Football Tournament Society members, and the Durand Cup Organising Committee also attended the function.
The triumph is a historic achievement for NorthEast United FC, who have demonstrated determination and perseverance in the tournament, brining glory to India’s northeast football-loving region.
John Abraham Expresses Gratitude
In his speech during the event, John Abraham expressed gratitude to President Murmu for the honor and recognition of the team. He also congratulated the Indian armed forces, especially the Eastern Command, for their unflinching dedication to maintaining and upgrading the Durand Cup.
Abraham pointed out how the tournament not only commemorated football but also brought national unity and motivated young people throughout the nation. “The commitment of the armed forces to developing football talent in the east and northeast has been a key driver of the growth of football in the region,” he added.
Football’s Expanding Reach in India
The ceremony was not just a felicitation; it highlighted the Durand Cup’s role as a force to uphold India’s football infrastructure. With its rich history of more than 130 years, the tournament continues to be a connect between India’s sporting past and its modern-day aspirations.
The President’s appreciation of NEUFC also symbolizes the increasing importance of football in India, especially in places where the sport has become a way of life.
The ceremony ended with a group photo opportunity with President Murmu, the winning NEUFC team, and officials of the armed forces and organising committee. The moment encapsulated not just the pride of a footballing team but also the essence of unity and national heritage perpetuated through the Durand Cup.
