Five-time IPL champions Chennai Super Kings (CSK) are preparing to make a major move before the IPL 2026 mega auction. As per a report by ESPN Cricinfo, the franchise is likely to release Sri Lankan fast bowler Matheesha Pathirana, ending a three-year stint with the team.
The official retention deadline ends at 3 pm on Saturday. CSK reportedly held long discussions on the pacer’s future before deciding to move forward with the release. Pathirana joined CSK in 2023 and immediately grabbed attention with his slingy action, raw pace, and natural swing. His arrival sparked excitement within the team and among fans.
Pathirana’s Strong Debut: 19 Wickets & Dhoni’s Warning
Pathirana played a crucial role in CSK’s title win in 2023. He picked up 19 wickets in 12 matches at an economy of 8.01. His unique action also earned him detailed advice from MS Dhoni, who said Pathirana needed careful management from Sri Lanka Cricket to stay fit for the long term.
Dhoni’s warning proved accurate. Pathirana soon faced repeated injury setbacks that disrupted his rhythm and consistency.
Injuries and Form Dip Over the Next Two Seasons
Over the next two years, Pathirana’s progress was repeatedly halted by injuries. His IPL 2024 season ended early due to a hamstring injury. He also had to return early from the SA20 while playing for Joburg Super Kings.
In IPL 2025, Pathirana played 12 matches and took 13 wickets, but his economy crossed 10 runs per over. This was a clear drop from his impressive debut season.
CSK Concerned Over Rhythm and Bowling Changes
Head coach Stephen Fleming earlier expressed concern over Pathirana’s declining effectiveness. He hinted that changes made by Sri Lanka Cricket to Pathirana’s release point might have affected his rhythm.
Fleming said the team felt the bowler looked uncomfortable during matches at times, which added to their concerns about his long-term performance.
CSK Likely to Release Him but May Buy Him Back
With his injuries increasing and his impact reducing, CSK are now expected to release the 22-year-old pacer before the auction. However, the franchise may attempt to buy him back during the auction in Abu Dhabi on December 16.
Pathirana has only represented CSK in the IPL so far. He has taken 47 wickets in 32 matches, averaging 21.61 with an economy of 8.68.
Major Changes in CSK Squad Ahead of Auction
CSK will enter the IPL 2026 auction with a large purse. The franchise has already released Devon Conway and Rachin Ravindra. They also completed a major trade that sent Ravindra Jadeja and Sam Curran to the Rajasthan Royals in exchange for Sanju Samson. These moves indicate that CSK are preparing for a significant rebuild.
CSK’s Shift Toward Long-Term Durability
CSK’s decision appears driven not only by performance but also by a shift in strategy. The team now aims to build a pace unit that can stay fit through long tournaments. Pathirana’s repeated injuries highlight the risks of relying heavily on fragile fast bowlers. This shift suggests CSK may target durable, multi-phase pacers in the upcoming auction.
