In a historic breakthrough for women’s cricket, the International Cricket Council (ICC) has committed a record $13.88 million prize fund for the forthcoming Women’s World Cup, even surpassing the previous men’s tournament.
Historic Boost in Prize Fund
The prize fund has witnessed a dramatic increase from $3.5 million in 2022 to almost four times the money in 2025. Importantly, the new amount trumps the $10 million paid out in the previous Men’s World Cup, a milestone in the quest for gender equality by the sport. Cricket administrators and past players have welcomed the decision as a long-overdue acknowledgment of the women’s game.
“Defining Milestone,” Says Jay Shah
ICC chairman Jay Shah welcomed the move as a “landmark moment” for women’s cricket.
“This four-fold hike in prize money is a manifestation of our unambiguous commitment to the development of women’s cricket. Our message is clear: women cricketers need to understand that they will be treated equally with men if they pursue this sport professionally,” he mentioned.
Winners to Receive $4.48 Million
The winners of the 13th Women’s World Cup will receive $4.48 million, a huge 239% increase from Australia’s $1.32 million in 2022. The second-placed team will take home $2.24 million compared to England’s $600,000 three years ago. Semi-finalists and group-stage competitors will also receive much higher prize funds.
Tournament Details
India and Sri Lanka will co-host the 2025 Women’s World Cup, which will start on September 30. Host India will take on Sri Lanka in the inaugural match in Guwahati, while Pakistan will contest all their matches in Colombo under a compromise agreement that enables both countries to play at neutral venues.
The final will be held on November 2, either in Mumbai or Colombo, depending upon Pakistan’s performance.
This historic prize increase reflects the ICC’s determination to increase the profile of women’s cricket internationally and encourage the next generation of female cricketers.
