England all-rounder Chris Woakes has closed the curtains on a dazzling international career, going on to announce his retirement from all forms of international cricket on Monday. The 36-year-old confirmed that he will remain active in county cricket for Warwickshire and consider franchise prospects around the world.

From Backyard Dreams to England Stardom

Woakes made his international debut in 2013 and represented England in 217 matches across all formats. With his very presence being a calm influence and his spells capable of changing the game, he became a vital cog in England’s transformation into a white-ball giant.

In Test cricket, Woakes appeared in 62 games, taking 192 wickets with five five-wicket bundles and scoring a historic century at Lord’s vs. India in 2018. In ODIs, he took 173 wickets from 122 games, and in 33 T20Is, he bagged 31 wickets.

Chris Woakes’s World Cup Heroics That Defined a Generation

Woakes was among the stars of England’s 2019 ICC Men’s Cricket World Cup victory, claiming three wickets in the record-breaking final at Lord’s. He also played for England in their 2022 ICC Men’s T20 World Cup triumph, as his team beat Pakistan in Melbourne.

“To play for England was something I dreamt about from a child in the back garden and I feel very privileged to have lived those dreams,” Woakes wrote in his emotional retirement message.

A Grateful Farewell to Chris Woakes

In an emotional statement, Woakes expressed gratitude to parents, wife Amie, and daughters Laila and Evie for unstinting support.

“To my Mum and Dad, my wife Amie and our daughters Laila and Evie, thank you for love, support, and sacrifices throughout the years. None of this would have been possible without you,” he stated.

ECB’s Heartfelt Tribute to a Genuine Gentleman Chris Woakes

England and Wales Cricket Board Chair Richard Thompson praised Woakes as the complete team man, remembering his determination in the 2023 Ashes, when he was chosen Player of the Series.

The sight of Chris coming out to bat with his arm in a sling in an attempt to help England win a Test match this summer spoke volumes for how much he cared about representing his country,” Thompson added. “From genius with the new ball at the 2019 World Cup to his Ashes heroics, he has left an unbelievable legacy.”

What’s Next for the Chris Woakes?

While Woakes is retiring from international cricket, he will still be playing in county cricket and seeking franchise league opportunities around the globe. His all-around capabilities and placid temperament are also likely to make him a high choice in future T20 leagues.
