World No. 1 Test bowler Jasprit Bumrah shared an emotional note on Sunday (August 24), soon after Cheteshwar Pujara announced his retirement from Indian cricket. The 37-year-old batter from Saurashtra confirmed the news earlier in the day through a post on X.

Pujara’s Career Highlights

Pujara represented India in 103 Test matches between 2010 and 2023 and scored 7,195 runs, which included 19 centuries. Known for his resilience and patience at the crease, he played a decisive role in India’s historic Test series victories in Australia—first under Virat Kohli’s leadership in 2018–19 and again in 2020–21 with Ajinkya Rahane as captain.

Bumrah’s Heartfelt Message

Bumrah, who shared the dressing room with Pujara on several tours, expressed his admiration through an Instagram story. Posting a picture of Pujara, he wrote, “Cricket will miss you Pujji bhai. Wish you success on your next chapter.”

Praise from Cricketing Legends

Pujara’s announcement sparked an outpouring of tributes from cricket icons. Gautam Gambhir highlighted his grit, saying, “He stood tall when the storm raged, he fought when hope was fading. Congratulations Pujji.”

Sachin Tendulkar reflected on the stability Pujara brought to the Indian team at No. 3, writing, “Pujara, it was always reassuring to see you walk out at No. 3. You brought calm, courage, and a deep love for Test cricket every time you played. Your solid technique, patience, and composure under pressure have been a pillar for the team. Out of many, the 2018 series win in Australia stands out, it wouldn’t have been possible without your incredible resilience and match-winning runs. Congratulations on a wonderful career. Good luck for the next chapter. Enjoy your second innings!”

Former India head coach Ravi Shastri also praised him as a warrior. He wrote, “A real warrior. He was instrumental in my stint as coach for India being the No.1 side for 5 years on the trot and the 2 back to back series wins in Australia where he was simply brilliant. Well done Puji. God bless. @cheteshwar1.”

A Lasting Legacy

By the time he retired, Pujara had become the eighth-highest run scorer for India in Test cricket. His ability to withstand pressure, combined with his determination and discipline, earned him respect and admiration from teammates, opponents, and fans around the world.
