Brendan Taylor has made an emotional return to international cricket, describing his comeback as “a debut-like feeling.” After serving a three-and-a-half-year ban for breaching the ICC’s anti-corruption code, the former Zimbabwe captain has stepped back onto the field with a new purpose and clarity.

The 38-year-old is featuring in Zimbabwe’s second Test against New Zealand in Bulawayo. His return is more than just a cricketing story, but it’s one of redemption, recovery, and resilience.

From Darkness to Light: Taylor’s Journey Back

Taylor spoke candidly ahead of the match, saying, “How good is it that three years ago, I couldn’t get out of bed and now I am here doing what I love, and that’s representing Zimbabwe?”

In 2021, Taylor suddenly retired from international cricket. Months later, he revealed being blackmailed by match-fixers who used footage of his drug use to pressure him. Taylor walked away and sought help. Instead of giving in, and entered rehab after the ICC announced his ban in 2022.

He spent those years rebuilding—not just his fitness, but also his identity. Barred from official cricket structures, he started coaching from home and focused on recovery. Zimbabwe Cricket’s MD Givemore Makoni encouraged him to play again, with the 2027 World Cup in mind.

“Dealing with the sanction, dealing with my internal chaos – there were multiple days of trauma,” Taylor admitted.

“I was in the dark depths… trying to just get through this incomprehensible demoralisation of life.”

His wife, Kelly-Anne, initially didn’t believe his sudden rehab decision. Taylor admitted he hid his struggles, “I felt it was something I got myself into and I needed to fix it myself.”

Now, after undergoing physical and emotional transformation, Taylor feels ready to start again. He has shed almost 20 kilograms and says he is now “living good, clean and healthy.”

A Moment of Redemption

When Zimbabwe handed him his 36th Test cap, the moment hit hard. “It meant the world to me… pure gratitude and real emotion,” Taylor said. “It’s a debut-like feeling.”

He now opens the batting—moving from his usual No. 4 spot—and scored his first runs off a top-edged pull over the wicketkeeper. Though he won’t keep wickets in this match, Taylor insists he’s fitter than ever.

He also thanked those who stood by him, “There have been some very important people in my corner… I am eternally grateful.” “If I had not made that life-changing decision, none of this would have been possible.”

Despite Zimbabwe’s current six-match losing streak, Taylor brings hope, experience, and a deeply personal story of recovery. He says that while performance matters, the journey back means more. “There’s a much bigger picture here for me to play. It’s an honour to play again.”
