2030 Commonwealth Games: India is expected to spend a large amount of money hosting the 2030 Commonwealth Games in Ahmedabad, if it is confirmed as the host in the upcoming Commonwealth Sport General Assembly on 26 November 2025. Although the final budget hasn’t been officially announced yet. Here’s what we know from previous Games and recent infrastructure spending.
Commonwealth Games 2010 Cost
India hosted the Commonwealth Games for the first time in 2010. The games were held in Delhi and took a lot of investment from the government. According to several reports published online, the government exceeded their planned budget for the games manyfold. The proposed budget cost of hosting the 2010 Commonwealth Games was estimated to be ₹1200 crore, which rose to more than ₹18,000 crore according to an official report by the Comptroller and Auditor General (CAG). However, several reports estimated the spending to have been more than the claimed figures. Several outlets reported the spending to be more than double the official figures, with the numbers going as high as ₹70,000 crore.
This money went into building new stadiums, expanding the metro, improving roads, making bridges and flyovers, boosting the city’s power supply, and beautifying Delhi. The Opening and Closing ceremonies alone cost almost Rs 300 crore.

Ahmedabad’s Recent Major Sports Investments
Ahmedabad has been investing in sports facilities for several years. The city’s most famous project is the Narendra Modi Stadium, which is the largest cricket stadium in the world. In September 2025, India opened the Veer Savarkar Sports Complex, its largest, high-tech sports complex in Naranpura, Ahmedabad, built at Rs 825 crore. This includes indoor and outdoor arenas, an international standard aquatic complex, and residential spaces for athletes. Such venues are likely to be central parts of the Commonwealth Games in 2030.
Cost of Hosting 2030 Commonwealth Games
To host an event for 72 countries, Ahmedabad will need world-class stadiums, hotels, transport, security, and training centres. The city already has modern facilities, but more work is planned: building sports villages for athletes, upgrading existing stadiums, improving roads and metro links, and enhancing airport and accommodation capacity.
The government’s long-term vision is to make India a leader in every field by 2047. For this, India’s yearly sports budget has risen from ₹1,643 crore in 2014 to ₹3,794 crore in 2025.
How Much Will India Spend to Host the 2030 Commonwealth Games?
While the overall expenditure of the 2030 Commonwealth Games isn’t confirmed yet, considering previous events and ongoing works, it could very well be in tens of thousands of crores. Delhi 2010 has been reported to have cost ₹18,000 crore as per official documents. With new technology, plans, and modern standards, the cost of hosting the 2030 Commonwealth Games in Ahmedabad is likely to be high.
