In an unusual statement that has caught global attention, Albanian Prime Minister Edi Rama announced that the country’s AI Minister of State for Artificial Intelligence, Diella, is “pregnant” with 83 digital assistants. The news quickly went viral after being shared by news agency Pop Base on X, gaining nearly 3 million views.

Rama made the announcement during his address at the Berlin Global Dialogue (BGD). He said, “For the first time Diella is pregnant and with 83 children.” The Prime Minister explained that these “children” would function as digital assistants for each Member of Parliament from the Socialist Party.

Who Is Diella?

Diella, whose name means “sun” in Albanian, became the world’s first AI minister when she was appointed in September 2025. Her main responsibility is to oversee Albania’s public procurement system.

Before becoming a minister, Diella worked as a virtual assistant on the e-Albania portal. She helped citizens and businesses access official documents and government services online. She is represented as a woman dressed in traditional Albanian attire, reflecting a blend of cultural identity and modern innovation.

What Will Diella’s 83 Digital Assistants Do?

Rama said that every MP would get their own AI-powered assistant to help them with parliamentary work. “Each one…will serve as an assistant for them who will participate in parliamentary sessions, and will keep a record of everything that happens and will suggest members of parliament. These children will have the knowledge of their mother,” Rama added.

He gave an example of how these AI assistants will work in real time. “For example, if you go for coffee and forget to come back to work, this child will say what was said when you were not in the hall, and will say who you should counter-attack. If you invite me next time, you will have 83 more screens for the children of Diella,” he said.

According to Rama, the government plans to make the system fully operational by the end of 2026.

Albania’s Push for AI Governance

Edi Rama’s government has taken bold steps toward using artificial intelligence in governance. The appointment of an AI minister is seen as a pioneering move to integrate technology in public administration.

By introducing Diella’s 83 digital assistants, Albania aims to make its parliamentary processes more transparent, efficient, and data-driven. However, Rama’s “pregnancy” metaphor has sparked mixed reactions online, with many finding it bizarre yet fascinating.

Despite the unusual phrasing, Rama’s vision highlights how AI is set to play a growing role in politics and governance worldwide.
