Apple is gearing up to launch its AI platform soon, Apple Intelligence, with the upcoming iOS 18.1 release. Revealed at WWDC 2024, Apple Intelligence aims to improve AI Siri, device privacy, and on-device AI processing capabilities. As part of these rollout preparations, Apple has also boosted its bug bounty program, where it will pay as much as $1 million (about ₹8.32 crore) to whoever will be able to spot critical vulnerabilities in its Private Cloud Compute (PCC) platform that supports Apple Intelligence.

The press release highlights Apple’s dedication to its security over fraud scrutiny of AI across the world. Apple is going out of its way to ensure that its AI-based services keep your device 100% secure, private, and resistant to cyberattacks. But even as the spotlight is trained on cloud and server safety, most Apple users wonder: does this imply the iPhone 15, 16, or even the iPhone 17 might be “hacked” and receive the same payout?

Understanding Apple’s Bug Bounty Program

Apple’s bug bounty program is totally cloud-based. The principal objective is to find risks within the PCC system, which serves as the first priority for Apple Intelligence. The PCC system is based on Apple’s private silicon servers and an operating system that is fortified against data breaches and leaks.

The bounty is divided into 3 categories:

External compromise through user requests: Flaws that pertain to abusing PCC by transmitting requests that may allow unauthorized access or arbitrary code execution on user data. The maximum reward amount for this category is $1 million (₹8.32 crore).

Physical or internal access: These comprise privilege escalation attacks from within the PCC infrastructure, with up to $150,000 bounties.

iPhones and Apple Intelligence: What’s Eligible?

Numerous users have inquired about whether Apple’s flagship iPhones, like the iPhone 15, 16, or 17, can be “hacked” to receive the bounty. Here’s the truth:

iPhone 15 and 16: Extremely secure, to be sure, but no product is ever hack-proof. Apple always enhances its security features, such as the Secure Enclave and on-device encryption, to make exploits virtually impossible. But the bug bounty mainly targets cloud/server vulnerabilities.

iPhone 17: The iPhone 17 is rumored to include the A19 Pro chip, but Apple Intelligence needs some hardware and software specifications to function best. If Apple Intelligence is unofficially not supported by iPhone 17, then the device itself would not be eligible for the bug bounty. The $1 million reward works only if the vulnerability found in the device affects Apple Intelligence’s cloud servers (PCC).

That is, the reward is not for hacking an iPhone per se. It is for revealing security vulnerabilities in Apple Intelligence that can expose user information or cloud processing.

Apple’s Security Vision

The Apple iPhone expanded bug bounty program is only one of the features of Apple’s larger mission to provide trust and security in the age of AI to its audience. Through inviting independent researchers worldwide, Apple always wishes to identify its flaws prior to malicious attacks without exploiting them. Apple also offers comprehensive resources such as the Private Cloud Compute Security Guide to encourage openness and responsible research.

Although iPhones, including the new iPhone 17, are made extremely secure, the greatest promise for a bug bounty exists with cloud/server vulnerabilities and not device-based hacks.
