BJP Rajya Sabha MP Raghav Chadha on Wednesday launched a sharp attack on the AAP government in Punjab over the state’s drug problem, calling the party a “dil jala aashiq” as he claimed that AAP is obsessed with Raghav Chadha, he stated this while questioning its claims of having curbed the menace.
Chadha alleged that narcotics remained easily available across Punjab, including through what he described as “home delivery”. He said the situation had reached a stage where people were allegedly standing in queues for drugs just as they would for ration.
Targeting the AAP government over the recent death of Sangrur farm labourer Gulzar Singh, Chadha questioned its claim of having brought the drug problem under control. He alleged that Gulzar had raised concerns over the worsening situation and was subsequently subjected to pressure and harassment that drove him to take his own life.
Chadha also alleged that a BJP delegation was prevented from meeting Gulzar’s family to offer condolences.
Announcing the BJP’s statewide Nasha Mukt Punjab Yatra, Chadha said the campaign would be held from September 18 to 30 and would begin from four different locations across the state. He said the BJP would present its roadmap and detailed strategy to make Punjab drug free during the campaign.
The BJP leader said the drug issue had become a major political battleground ahead of the Punjab Assembly elections and accused the AAP government of being on the defensive over its handling of the crisis.
Chadha’s remarks come amid a growing political row over the drug menace and the death of Gulzar Singh, with opposition parties demanding accountability from the AAP government and an independent probe into the circumstances surrounding his death.
