Union Home Minister Amit Shah raised a clarion call about the repeated disruptions in the Parliament, stating that there should be no room for these types of practices in a democratic institution. Also, addressing the All-India Speakers Conference in New Delhi, Shah said that Parliament and Assemblies are meant for debate, dialogue, and constructive decision-making. He cautioned that when the sessions are stalled in the name of opposition, the larger purpose of nation building is suffering.
The recently interrupted Monsoon Session was unproductive as it lacked legislative business amidst protests and adjournments. Shah reminded lawmakers that opposition is undertaken responsibly, not as a tool of narrow gain on their politics. “There must be debate in a democracy. But when Houses are brought to a standstill session after session, it is not good for the country,” he said.

Duty of the Opposition
The Home Minister said political representatives of all shades should think through the outcome of constant dislocation of proceedings. He insisted that opposition is an important component of democracy and restraint or temperance in the expression of political view, as indeed the esteem for parliamentary propriety, are equally necessary. By preventing matters being discussed, such elected representatives undermine, antagonistically to their roles, not only the institution but the belief of the populace in the system as a whole.
He called upon both treasury and opposition benches to keep impartiality in the arguments so that the Speaker’s chair remains a revered and neutral platform. To it, the manner by which the House would always conduct itself must continue to adhere to rules and procedures.
Lessons from History
In resonating reference to what happened to Draupadi in the Mahabharata, Shah cautioned that the consequences could be dire when legislative institutions are devalued.

He lauded India’s democratic resilience since Independence wherein power exchanged hands peacefully in the country, unlike many nations where democracy has been corrupted by violent and unstable means.
Remembering Vitthalbhai Patel
Shah paid homage to celebrate a hundred years of India’s first elected Speaker of the Central Legislative Assembly, Vitthalbhai Patel. Declaring him as “pioneer in legislative history,” Shah said that Patel has lost a lot of importance because of people not recognizing his efforts though Patel is a crucial figure in the making of the parliamentary tradition. He emphasized that while the struggle for freedom was important, it was also necessary for India’s stability to formulate democratic procedures.
The speech by Amit Shah was not merely a criticism of the opposition’s recent methodology but also a larger call for restoring dignity, discipline, and seriousness in parliamentary conduct. What was evident was the clear message the credibility of democracy lies in meaningful debate, not in deadlock.
