Violent clashes broke out in Patna on Friday as BJP workers stormed the streets to protest against derogatory remarks made about Prime Minister Narendra Modi and his late mother. The comments were allegedly shouted during an INDIA bloc rally in Darbhanga. Tension escalated quickly when protesters gathered near the Congress office in the state capital. The demonstration soon turned chaotic as groups clashed, and stones were hurled, leaving the area in turmoil.
Protests Spread to Darbhanga
The unrest was not confined to Patna. A day earlier, BJP supporters had staged heated demonstrations in Darbhanga, the very place where the remarks were made. Anger simmered across the town as slogans rang out against Congress and its allies. The Bihar State Women’s Commission intervened promptly, urging authorities to take “suo motu” action against the culprits. Their letter to officials underlined the seriousness of the insult and demanded immediate accountability.
Effigies Burnt, Accused Arrested
Public anger grew louder in Darbhanga. BJP workers burnt effigies of Congress leader Rahul Gandhi and RJD’s Tejashwi Yadav as a mark of protest. The demonstrations were led by two-time MP Gopaljee Thakur, who accused opposition leaders of crossing every line of decency. By Friday morning, police moved in and arrested the man accused of shouting abusive remarks against PM Modi. His arrest temporarily calmed the situation but failed to douse the growing resentment on the ground.
BJP Leaders Vow Retaliation
BJP leaders issued strong warnings in response to the incident. Bihar Minister and BJP leader Nitin Nabin said, “Every son of Bihar will give a befitting reply to Congress for insulting a mother. We will take revenge for this.” He accused the opposition of attacking not only PM Modi but the cultural values of Bihar itself.
Union Home Minister Amit Shah also weighed in. Targeting Rahul Gandhi directly, Shah said Gandhi had “started politics of hatred” and was pushing the nation toward division. His remarks signaled that the controversy could shape the BJP’s campaign narrative in Bihar ahead of future elections.
Congress Hits Back
Congress leaders rejected the charges and turned the blame toward the state government. Party worker Ashutosh said, “This is happening with the government’s involvement. Nitish Kumar is doing wrong. A befitting reply will be given.” The Congress maintained that the BJP was trying to politicize the issue to divert attention from governance failures in Bihar.

Police Launch Investigation
As the situation escalated, law enforcement stepped in to restore order. Superintendent of Police Ashok Kumar Chaudhary told reporters that a case had been formally registered. He assured that strict action would be taken against anyone found guilty of inciting violence or using abusive language. Police presence increased in sensitive areas to prevent fresh outbreaks of violence.
BJP Slams INDIA Bloc’s Rally
The BJP strongly criticized the INDIA bloc’s “Voter Adhikar Yatra,” calling it a campaign of “insult, hate, and tastelessness.” In a statement, the party said abuses against PM Modi’s mother exposed the desperation of the opposition. Though BJP refrained from sharing the video on its official social media handle, several clips circulated online showing unidentified individuals shouting derogatory slogans from the rally stage.
The BJP declared that the people of Bihar would never forgive such an act. “Even if Rahul Gandhi and Tejashwi Yadav apologise a thousand times, this shameful incident will not be forgotten,” the party’s statement read.
Local Congress Leader Offers Apology
Amid the uproar, Youth Congress leader Mohd Naushad admitted that the viral video had been recorded from a podium he had erected in Darbhanga. However, he distanced himself from the controversy, saying he was not present when the abuses were hurled. “The video appears to have been shot after I left the spot. Still, I offer my apologies if anything of the sort has happened,” he said. His statement aimed to contain the damage but left questions about accountability within the Congress ranks.
