Prime Minister Narendra Modi has inaugurated Maruti Suzuki’s first battery electric vehicle (BEV) plant and lithium-ion battery production facility at Hansalpur in Gujarat. The project is being seen as a major step in India’s journey towards electric mobility and clean energy.

This new plant will make Maruti Suzuki’s first global electric SUV, the e-Vitara. Along with the SUV, the facility will also produce key battery components that will be used in electric and hybrid cars. The initiative aims to make India a global hub for electric vehicle exports and reduce dependence on imports.

Maruti Suzuki’s First Global EV

The e-Vitara is Maruti Suzuki’s first electric SUV. It has been developed for buyers in India as well as international markets. The SUV comes with two battery options. The standard version uses a 49 kWh battery that produces 143 PS power and 189 Nm torque. The larger 61 kWh battery version delivers 174 PS power and can travel over 500 kilometres on a single charge.

For those looking for more performance, Maruti Suzuki will also offer an all-wheel-drive (AWD) variant. This version has dual motors and delivers 184 PS power and 300 Nm torque. The e-Vitara also supports fast DC charging. With this feature, the battery can reach 80 percent charge in just 50 minutes.

Dimensions and Safety

The e-Vitara has a bold and muscular design. It measures 4,275 mm in length, 1,800 mm in width, and 1,640 mm in height, with a wheelbase of 2,700 mm. Safety is one of its biggest strengths.

The SUV comes with seven airbags, lane-keeping assist, electronic stability control, tire pressure monitoring, and collision mitigation technology. It also includes Level 2 driver-assist systems, which improve road safety and make driving easier.

Interior and Features

Inside the cabin, the SUV has been designed with both luxury and practicality in mind. It has twin 10-inch floating displays, a premium Harman Infinity sound system, and wireless smartphone connectivity.

Passengers can enjoy multi-zone climate control, power-adjustable seating, and more than 60 connected car features through the Next-Gen Suzuki Connect platform.

Market Launch and Price

In September 2025, Maruti Suzuki intends to introduce the e-Vitara. It is anticipated that the SUV will cost between 17 lakh and 22.5 lakh. Maruti Suzuki will pursue international markets like Europe and Japan in addition to Indian consumers.

This demonstrates the company’s goal of introducing EVs manufactured in India to the global market.

India’s Leap in Electric Mobility

This Gujarati plant’s opening marks a significant milestone for the Indian auto sector. The project complements the government’s Make in India and Aatmanirbhar Bharat vision by focusing on exports, producing EVs locally, and utilizing sophisticated battery technology.

It demonstrates how swiftly India is emerging as a pioneer in environmentally friendly and sustainable mobility.
