Mother Teresa, born Anjeze Gonxhe Bojaxhiu in Skopje in 1910, continues to be a global symbol of pity and altruism. At the age of 18, she left her family to join the Sisters of Loreto and adopted the name Teresa. She then passed through Ireland to India, where she began her novitiate and ultimately her life mission. Her relentless work with the abandoned and the destitute became the basis for a movement that would inspire millions across the world.
On her 115th birthday anniversary, special prayers were arranged at the House of the Missionaries of Charity in Kolkata a congregation she founded in 1950. During the special Mass Archbishop Thomas D’Souza spoke of Mother Teresa’s message that life is sacred and should be protected against violence, conflict, or neglect. He reminded the faithful that “war, conflict and destruction cannot coexist with the sanctity of life,” reiterating her philosophy throughout her life.

Mother Teresa in Missionaries of Charity
From her small beginnings in Kolkata, the Missionaries of Charity has blossomed into a vast global movement. The congregation remains committed to those many in society prefer to ignore orphans and abandoned children, the aged, the disabled, and the destitute. On the day of her birth, candles were lit, and prayers offered by the sisters of the order as they reaffirmed their commitment to continue with Mother Teresa’s mission.

Over the decades, the missionaries extended the humanitarian work they did through Asia, Africa and Latin America. These humanitarian efforts include disaster relief for floods, disease outbreak relief and refugee crisis support, always with the philosophy that each life is of value. According to Mother Teresa, that small things done with great love can change the world; this is the philosophy her congregation still follows.
Quotes of Mother Teresa
Yesterday is gone. Tomorrow has not yet come. We have only today. Let us begin.
Not all of us can do great things. But we can do small things with great love.
It’s not how much we give but how much love we put into giving.

A Global Saint and Timeless Inspiration
Mother Teresa’s efforts were not only celebrated in India but also all over the world. In 1979, she won the Nobel Peace Prize, which she humbly directed towards helping the poor by requesting that the prize fund be put to the benefit of the poor. Her canonization in 2016 and her designation as the Patron Saint of Kolkata in 2017 reflect the respect she had gained the world over for her tireless service.
Though she passed on in 1997, her very presence is still felt in Kolkata and beyond. Her funeral was accorded state honors by the government of India, a rare privilege given to a woman religious, thus signifying the gratefulness of the nation. Today, her life remains a reminder to humankind of the power of kindness and of the sacred duty to uphold dignity for all.
