Significance of Ganesh Chaturthi

The festival honours Lord Ganesha as the remover of obstacles, the god of wisdom, prosperity, and new beginnings. It starts on Bhadrapada’s fourth day and ends on Anant Chaturdashi. Devotees pray to Lord Ganesha for success, prosperity, and wisdom. According to Hindus, Goddess Parvati made Ganesha from clay, and later Lord Shiva replaced his head with that of an elephant and after that with all the blessings Lord Ganesha became the god worshipped before all other deities. During Ganesh Chaturthi, families, friends and nearby come together, decorate their homes and public places, and take part in lively processions to show their devotion and celebrate their culture.

Rituals and Offerings

The festival begins with a priest performing “pranapratistha” to bring the idol to life using sacred mantras, sandalwood paste, and kumkum. Devotees offer coconut, jaggery, durva grass, red flowers, and modak to please the deity. Twenty-one durvas and twenty-one modaks are meticulously prepared. Devotional songs and mantras fill the atmosphere. Families, friends, and communities come together to celebrate, creating a strong sense of unity and spiritual connection.

Ganesh Visarjan: Farewell Ceremony

The festival concludes with Ganesh Visarjan, where idols are immersed in water. In Andhra Pradesh, devotees prepare special dishes like kudumu, panakam, vadapappu, and chalividi, along with idols made of plaster of Paris and turmeric. Devotees pray for Ganesha’s return next year, cherishing memories of joyous celebrations. Visarjan also symbolizes letting go and life’s impermanence, reminding devotees of spiritual values and renewal.
