The Shri Mata Vaishno Devi Shrine Board (SMVDSB) recently approved a Rs 250-crore ropeway connecting Tarakote Marg to Sanji Chhat, aiming to reduce the 13-kilometer pilgrimage to a six-minute journey. While the project promises enhanced accessibility for pilgrims, especially the elderly and differently-abled, locals fear it may bypass traditional routes, affecting businesses that rely on foot traffic.

Protesters, chanting slogans and holding placards, demanded the project’s cancellation or adequate compensation for those affected. The demonstration turned tense as some participants clashed with police, leading to minor injuries.

Anshul Garg, CEO of SMVDSB, stated that the board is open to discussions with stakeholders to address their concerns. He emphasized that the ropeway aims to improve pilgrimage experiences without compromising local livelihoods.

The protest underscores the delicate balance between development and preserving traditional economies. As the situation unfolds, authorities and locals are urged to engage in constructive dialogue to find a mutually beneficial solution.
