A 38-year-old man in Kerala’s Malappuram has tested positive for Mpox, health officials confirmed on Wednesday. The patient, who had recently returned from Dubai, showed symptoms of the disease and was admitted to the Government Medical College hospital in Malappuram. His test samples confirmed the Mpox infection.

Kerala Health Minister Veena George stated that the man was isolated at home upon his return and took necessary precautionary measures.

Mpox, a viral illness similar to smallpox, presents with symptoms such as skin rashes, fever, and flu-like manifestations. It primarily spreads through close skin-to-skin contact and, while often self-limiting, can be fatal in certain cases.

Kerala has remained vigilant for Mpox cases since August, following the World Health Organization’s declaration of a Public Health Emergency of International Concern. The state had reported similar cases in 2022. Health authorities continue to monitor the situation closely to prevent further spread.
