Television actor Mohsin Khan, known for his role in “Yeh Rishta Kya Kehlata Hai,” recently disclosed that he suffered a mild heart attack in 2023. Alongside this, he was diagnosed with a condition known as non-alcoholic fatty liver disease (NAFLD). The 32-year-old actor shared that the pressure of working continuously for seven years took a toll on his health, eventually leading to hospitalization.

“I was diagnosed with fatty liver and last year, I suffered a mild heart attack. I did not share this with people,” Mohsin Khan said. The actor further explained that his hectic schedule and disrupted sleep patterns contributed to his health issues. “My immune system had become very weak. I used to fall sick a lot,” he added.

Understanding Fatty Liver and Its Health Risks

Fatty liver, or steatosis, occurs when excess fat builds up around liver cells, hampering the liver’s ability to function properly. The liver plays a crucial role in digestion, metabolism, hormone regulation, and nutrient storage. When fatty liver disease develops, it can trigger inflammation, which in turn increases the risk of various health issues, including heart disease, kidney disease, and even liver cancer.

The Link Between Fatty Liver and Heart Attack

Dr. Rajiv Kovil, head of diabetology at Zandra Healthcare, explained that fatty liver disease could reduce blood flow to the heart, raising the risk of cardiac issues such as heart attacks and strokes. “There are various factors contributing to fatty liver, such as diabetes, obesity, high levels of bad cholesterol, malnutrition, drinking too much alcohol, rapid weight loss, and taking certain medications,” Dr. Kovil said. The inflammation caused by fatty liver can also lead to other complications, including high blood pressure and type 2 diabetes.

Supporting this, Dr. Uday Sanglodkar, senior consultant hepatologist at Gleneagles Hospital, noted that excess fat near the liver can cause scarring and inflammation, particularly in the arteries. This can disrupt blood flow to the heart and increase the risk of heart attacks.

Fatty Liver: Symptoms and Prevention

Fatty liver disease is often asymptomatic, making it difficult to detect early. However, some markers include excessive fatigue, abdominal discomfort, nausea, loss of appetite, unintended weight loss, jaundice, and recurring digestive problems. The condition is often linked to unhealthy eating habits, such as consuming too much fried, processed, and sugary food.

A 2022 study also revealed that adults with NAFLD are 3.5 times more likely to develop heart failure. The study noted that the disease is more common in older individuals, males, and people with diabetes or coronary heart disease.

Conclusion

Mohsin Khan’s revelation highlights the importance of understanding the connection between fatty liver disease and heart health. It serves as a reminder to prioritize health and seek medical advice if symptoms arise. Maintaining a healthy lifestyle, including a balanced diet and regular exercise, is essential in preventing and managing conditions like fatty liver and heart disease.
