Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky has urged Western allies to provide “a clear position” on security guarantees, including a potential deployment of foreign troops in Ukraine with US backing. His call comes amid ongoing tensions with Russia, as peace efforts remain stalled.
Starmer Backs Coalition to Secure Ukraine
Zelensky’s statement followed a virtual meeting with British Prime Minister Keir Starmer and other European leaders. Starmer emphasized that a “coalition of the willing” would help defend Ukraine on land, sea, and air in case of a peace deal with Russia.
“We need to continue working on the contingents that will form the foundation of Europe’s future Armed Forces,” Zelensky posted on X, arguing that European peacekeepers, supported by the US, would strengthen long-term security.
Putin’s Stance on Ceasefire and Peace Efforts
Russian President Vladimir Putin recently expressed conditional support for former US President Donald Trump’s proposed 30-day ceasefire. However, he insisted that Russia would continue fighting until its key conditions were met.
Zelensky dismissed Putin’s objections to the presence of European peacekeepers, accusing Russia of deliberately obstructing a ceasefire.
“A ceasefire could have already happened, but Russia is doing everything to prevent it,” Zelensky stated.
Next Steps for Ukraine’s Defense
As the Russia-Ukraine war enters its third year, Ukraine continues to push for stronger Western military commitments. While discussions on European peacekeeping forces and a US security backstop remain ongoing, tensions over the future of the conflict persist.
