Suicide bombing occurred in the southern Iranian port city of Bandar Lengeh on Saturday killed the head of police intelligence, according to Iranian state media. The unidentified bomber, who also died in the attack, targeted the police headquarters in the Gulf city, injuring another police officer.

This comes just days before the anniversary of two suicide bombings on January 3, 2020, that claimed nearly 100 lives during a memorial for top Iranian commander Qassem Soleimani in southeastern Iran. Those bombings, which were later claimed by the Islamic State, were a stark reminder of the continuing security threats in the region.

The identity of the bomber is still unknown, and no group has claimed responsibility for the bombing in Bandar Lengeh yet. The attack adds to a growing concern over instability and violence in the region.
