Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu has ordered a delay in the release of 110 Palestinian prisoners, which was part of the latest exchange under the Gaza ceasefire agreement. His office stated that the decision was made to ensure the safe return of Israeli hostages in future phases.

Reason for the Delay

Netanyahu, along with Defence Minister Israel Katz, announced the delay on Thursday, emphasizing that the move was a precautionary measure.

“Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu, along with Defence Minister Israel Katz, has instructed the delay of the release of the terrorists scheduled for today until the safe departure of our hostages in the upcoming phases is assured,” read the official statement from Netanyahu’s office.

Hamas Responds

A Hamas source told AFP that the group was in touch with mediators to “compel” Israel to release the prisoners as agreed. The ceasefire deal initially included a hostage-prisoner exchange, where Israel was to release 110 Palestinian detainees in exchange for three Israeli hostages.

Rising Tensions Over Ceasefire Agreement

The delay has sparked concerns over the fragile truce between Israel and Hamas, with both sides engaging in intense negotiations through mediators, including Qatar, Egypt, and the United States.

What’s Next?

It remains unclear how long the prisoner release will be postponed and whether Hamas will take retaliatory actions. The situation continues to develop as both parties navigate the complexities of the ceasefire terms.
