In a significant move to rebuild and revitalize communities near Gaza, Israel’s Ministry of Transportation and Road Safety has announced an investment of 28.5 billion Shekels (USD 7.81 billion). The initiative is part of a broader plan to support the Western Negev region, particularly areas affected by the October 7 terrorist attacks.
Focus on Restoration and Development
The revitalization project includes a series of transportation enhancements aimed at rebuilding destroyed infrastructure and supporting long-term growth. Key areas of focus include:
- Restoring infrastructure damaged during recent conflicts.
- Upgrading roads for better safety and security.
- Expanding access roads and creating escape routes.
- Enhancing public transportation and adding bicycle paths.
The Tkuma region, located near Gaza, will receive a dedicated investment of 5 billion Shekels (USD 1.37 billion).
Budget Allocations and Immediate Action
Under the 2024-2025 budget, the ministry has already approved:
- 850 million Shekels (USD 233 million) for the Tkuma region.
- 240 million Shekels (USD 66 million) for immediate use.
- An additional 100 million Shekels (USD 27.4 million) earmarked for the 2025 budget.
The ministry has also waived the requirement for matching funds from local authorities, expediting the implementation process.
Safety and Security Enhancements
The projects will cover cities like Sderot and regional councils, including Eshkol, Sdot Negev, Shaar Negev, and Ashkelon Beach. Specific upgrades include:
- Road lighting and intersection improvements.
- Safety measures on key connecting roads.
- Expanded public transportation services.
A Ministry spokesperson emphasized that these initiatives will not only restore the region but also provide a secure foundation for future growth
