Hamas Accepts Egyptian Proposal for Release of Hostages
Palestinian militant group Hamas has accepted a new Egyptian-proposed plan to release five hostages, including American-Israeli Edan Alexander, in exchange for a renewed ceasefire, according to reports. The proposal is reportedly on par with a prior plan proposed by US special envoy Steve Witkock, CNN said.
Egyptian officials confirmed the development to the Qatari news outlet New Arab, saying that the United States and Qatar are also in talks. “The ball is now in the Israeli government and Americans’ court,” Egyptian officials said.
Hamas Seeks Ceasefire Over Eid al-Fitr
Hamas is demanding a return to the first phase of the last ceasefire, including access for humanitarian aid and talks on a long-term truce. The group wants to get similar terms in return for freeing the five hostages. According to sources speaking with CNN, Hamas wants to impose the ceasefire around the Eid al-Fitr holiday, which marks the conclusion of Ramadan.
Israel Rejects Proposal, Submits Counter-Offer
In spite of the fact that Hamas agreed to the Egyptian proposal, Israel rejected the conditions and instead put forward a counter-proposal. The office of Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu confirmed that the new proposal was made in complete coordination with the United States.
Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu held a series of talks after receiving an offer made by the mediators. During the last few hours, Israel handed over its counter-proposal to the mediators, in complete coordination with the United States,” the Office of the Israeli Prime Minister said.
Escalating Violence and Humanitarian Crisis in Gaza
Tensions have risen as Israel restarted its military offensive in Gaza earlier this month, implementing a total blockade on humanitarian aid. The government of Israel said its military would keep forces stationed in areas of Gaza through the release of the remaining 24 hostages thought to be alive.
At least 50,277 Palestinians have been killed and 114,095 others wounded since Israel commenced its military campaign after the Hamas-led attacks on October 7, 2023, reports Gaza health officials. With ongoing negotiations, pressure is rising on both sides to arrive at a solution.
