As soon as winters begin, health issues in children become prevalent, including respiratory problems. Common cold is the most widespread ailment, and children often fall victim to it repeatedly in a season. Continuous complaints of cough, throat infections, and congestion accompany this. Since these are primarily viral infections, there are limited medications available. During infections, providing children with medication for comfort is crucial, while parents and family members should focus on their diet, hydration, and ensuring rest. Usually, infections resolve within 3 to 5 days, but weakened immunity in children can complicate matters, leading to conditions like pneumonia.

Handle negligence with care.
If your child experiences difficulty breathing, persistent cough, chest congestion, and bluish discoloration, consult a nearby pediatric respiratory specialist immediately. While pneumonia requires immediate attention, it can be life-threatening. Children prone to asthma and allergies are at an increased risk of serious complications during winters. Those already undergoing treatment should follow prescribed medications to avoid allergic reactions.

Pay attention to these essential points.
Parents of children with respiratory issues or allergies should regularly change their bedsheets and clean curtains and carpets at home. Avoid taking children into crowded places and encourage them to maintain cleanliness. When a child falls ill, use bronchodilators for emergency nebulization and contact their doctor.

Provide a healthy diet.
To enhance children’s immunity, it’s essential to provide them with a healthy diet, avoiding junk food, excessive sugar, and packaged foods. Include fruits, nuts, vegetables, eggs, grains, and lentils in their diet. Instead of serving a large meal at once, offer multiple smaller meals throughout the day. Ensure they drink warm or lukewarm water regularly to stay hydrated, as children often resist drinking water during winters.

Take extra care of infants.
For infants, daily sponge baths and maintaining a comfortable room temperature are crucial. Avoid covering them too much as excessive covering exposes them to the risk of overheating and difficulty breathing. Regular massages for oily skin and scalp are recommended. Glycerin is a good hydrating agent to keep the skin moist.
